Service Dog Trainer & Facilities Program Coordinator (Hopewell Junction, New York)

BluePath Service Dogs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides autism service dogs, offering safety, companionship, and opportunities for independence. They are a team of individuals dedicated to training and placing service dogs into homes of children and families affected by autism, significantly lessening parents’ safety concerns and helping children lead fuller lives.
The Service Dog Trainer and Facility Programs Coordinator will oversee and deliver BluePath’s programs in schools, camps, and residential institutions in Dutchess, Westchester, and the surrounding areas. Program participants / clients may have diverse abilities not limited to autism.
The selected candidate will provide the dogs with experience in unique training environments that will strengthen their skillset while achieving client goals that include engagement, emotional support, and mood regulation. Program participants will assist with training of the dogs, creating symbiotic and enriching relationships between human and canine.
This role handles the day-to-day coordination of all facility programs, including scheduling of current facilities and the evaluation of potential partners. Position also comprises dog obedience and skills training and support of volunteer puppy raisers, fosters, and sitters.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversight of BluePath’s programming in schools, camps, and residential facilities, including running on-site programs, evaluating potential new relationships, and managing schedules for existing partners.
  • Contribute to overall program strategy, including the development and ongoing enhancement of a structured curriculum with attainable goals and tangible metrics.
  • Work with partners to create a safe and trusting work environment for dogs and clients.
  • Educate and support partners and clients on safe and appropriate dog interactions.
  • Teach clients about a dog’s basic needs (feeding, grooming, bathroom routine, exercise, play, veterinary care), dog behavior and the difference between dog breeds.
  • General support of training department, including training dogs and working with volunteers.
  • Represent BluePath at speaking engagements and other functions.
  • Keep organized, accurate, and detailed records using BluePath databases.
  • Collect program data as needed. 
  • Some overnight travel and weekend work may occasionally be required.
Essential Qualifications
  • Associates degree required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Coursework in special education or relevant experience a plus.
  • 5+ years of professional dog training experience preferred
    1. Understanding of dog psychology, behavior, and body language, with the ability to utilize a variety of training methods customized to unique needs of dogs
    2. An in-depth knowledge of dog nature, behavior, reinforcers, and classical conditioning.
    3. Clicker training experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and a high degree of driving comfort. This position requires daily travel (in a company vehicle) to locations within 1.5 hours of BluePath’s HQ in Hopewell Junction.
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite

This position requires a kind, patient, high-energy, outgoing person, with knowledge of special needs and compassion towards children and adults with different abilities.  The right candidate will have the ability to support client and dogs simultaneously. They’ll find their own unique and savvy approach to encourage clients to find joy and humor when the dogs are present, enhancing the lives of both the human and the canine.

This is a Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:30pm position based in Dutchess County NY. Some evening and weekend hours will be required. Salary $58,000 - $68,000 commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits and vacation package.
